MBA/MS Environmental Toxicology

The opportunity for advancement to management and administrative positions in the field of Environmental Toxicology requires professionals whose education is strongly based in both toxicology and business principles.  Environmental Toxicology majors will want an MBA degree to prepare them for advancement in a chemical or pharmaceutical company. Business majors with a strong chemistry or biological science background will want a joint degree if they plan to work for an environmentally related company or one of the many companies that practice environmentally sound business practices.  There also are ever-increasing entrepreneurial opportunities in environmental toxicology, such as hazardous waste site remediation technology and environmental monitoring, sampling, and analysis.

This program brings together the expertise of The Institute of Environmental & Human Health (TIEHH), the Department of Environmental Toxicology, and the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration. Graduate students from the TIEHH participate in field students to assess the toxic effects on terrestrial and aquatic habitats as well as conduct laboratory experiments to learn about the nature of specific chemicals. Students tackle a wide range of issues. For example, recent studies have examined the effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals on crocodile species in Belize and studied the environmental effects of a smelter site in Montana. TIEHH along with the Brooks Air Force Base studied the effects of rocket propulsion systems (e.g., ammonium perchlorate) on the environment. As an additional example, TIEHH (with the Universities of Texas and South Florida) has formed the Admiral Zumwalt National Program for Countermeasures to Biological and Chemical Threats. These and many other projects, help students learn the toxic effects of various substances on the environment and the practical remediation of those effects.
