Doctorate of Jurisprudence/MBA
The Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration and the School of Law offer a joint program leading to a joint degree in a Doctorate of Jurisprudence (JD) and a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA). The joint degree allows you to complete the requirements for both programs on a fast track and obtain dual diplomas in three years. Students with both a JD and an MBA are attractive as corporate lawyers, members of law firms specializing in corporate law, or in-house lawyers for businesses. The JD/MBA degree prepares students for administrative or managerial positions in industry, commerce, or government where an understanding of law and business is required. This program is principally designed for students who wish to acquire broad business knowledge to complete their legal training.
The joint degree is designed as follows: Law school normally requires 90 credit hours for completion, while an MBA requires 48 credit hours. The JD/MBA student takes 78 credit hours of law courses and 34 credit hours of MBA courses (30 hours if students has a recent BBA from an AACSB accredited school). Therefore, the JD/MBA student saves 26 - 29 credit hours in obtaining the joint degree. Application and acceptance to the Rawls College of Business, Texas Tech University Graduate School and the Law School must be made. Admission to the Law School is only available in the fall semester, and the first year of the JD/MBA consists strictly of law courses. Business courses will be added to your schedule in the second and third years. Please check with the Law School and the Rawls College of Business on your specific situation and eligibility requirements.
Students wishing to get an early start, or perhaps participate in the law school's study abroad program after their first year, are allowed to take up to 12 hours of MBA courses prior to beginning their first year of law school.
